 Department of Transplantology's team
The Department of Transplantology's team is formed by (from left to right): Jacek Kijowski, Ewa Leśko, Małgorzata Stec, Elżbieta Trzyna, Ewa Zuba-Surma and Marcin Majka
Laboratories of the Department are provided with the top class scientific equipment, for including:
- one of the most efficient cell sorter by Mo-Flo DAKO Cytomation. It allows cell sorting of about 100 thousand cells per sec.
- DNA sequencer by ABI, allowing also assaying chimerism after allogenic transplatation.
The Department runs many projects on hemotopoietic and muscle stem cells biology. We study:
- the use of new factors facilitating the mobilization of hemotopoietic stem cells from bone marrow. It aims at increasing number of these cells in transplantation material.
- methods of culturing and expanding stem cells and more differentiated cells, for example megakaryocytes and monocytes.
- isolation of stem cells from heart and muscles skeleton(in cooperation with Department of Cardiosurgery). These cells may be potentially used in therapy of dystrophy and heart attaks.
- biology of pediatric tumors, especially small blue cell childhood tumors: neuroblastoma and rhabdomyosarcoma.
The good evidence, how important research in Department of Transplantation, may be fact that most of projects is financed by grants from The State Committee of Scientific Research. The results of the studies are published in the best Polish and international scientific journals.
The Department of Transplantation is the main coordinator of the stem cells project financed by EU. This project is aimed to create in Poland the Stem Cell Excellence Centre (STEC). This Centre will be created by numerous institutes from Poland, located in several cities, including Cracow, Warsaw and Szczecin.
